Summer Newsletter 2024
March 1, 2025Welcome to my summer news letter.
Throughout this year I have been making paintings which have continued along the theme of the recent public art work commission, ‘Threads through time’ which I produced for Leeds City Council and which can be viewed throughout the year on Neville Street, Leeds.
I have worked from archival photos of people and places that belong to my Northern heritage. The paintings are produced using a ‘Zorn Palette’ which is a limited colour palette invented by the Swedish Artist, Anders Zorn (1860-1920) It has four colours: yellow ochre, ivory black, vermillion, and white. Its possible to produce very subtle tones and shades with this palette, reflecting the limited colour range of some of the old photographs I have worked from.
You will be able to view two of these paintings at Leeds playhouse in the ‘Leeds Summer Group show’ The exhibition continues until August 30th:
‘Majestic’ oil on canvas, 100 x 100 cm, framed. This painting is based on a 1930s photo of a group of Norman Hartnell models on the rooftop of Leeds Queens Hotel looking across to the Iconic ‘Majestic’ building on City square.
‘One pad, no gloves’ oil on Linen, 32 x 32 cm framed A painting which represents cricketers of the ‘Hunslet Boys club’, Leeds circa 1940s
I also have two paintings currently exhibited at ‘Coles Gallery’ Leeds Corn Exchange:
‘Northern Traders’ oil on canvas 100 x 100cm This painting pays tribute to the men who traded in Corn at the Leeds Corn Exchange circa 1930s. I enjoyed painting these men, dressed resplendently in three piece suits wearing either homburgs or bowler hats on top!
‘Barcelona Blue’ oil on canvas 100 x 100 cm A very colourful holiday inspired painting which represents two figures in the beautiful Mediterranean light of Barcelona .
All of the above work is also available directly from my website, shop and commissions.
